Chicago, Illinois Government: Ensuring Quality Healthcare and Public Health Services

The government of Chicago, Illinois is dedicated to providing its citizens with access to quality healthcare and public health services. To this end, the state has taken a number of steps to ensure that all residents have access to the care they need. One of the most important initiatives is the requirement that insurance companies provide coverage for mental, emotional, nervous, or substance use disorders. This makes Illinois the third state in the country to mandate such coverage. The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) has also launched an evaluation program called Healthy Chicago 2025. This program is a collaboration between CDPH and the Partnership for Healthy Chicago, a coalition of more than 40 stakeholders representing the broad spectrum of Chicago's public health system.

The evaluation seeks to address issues such as residential segregation of the black population, disparities in spatial access to health centers, and late diagnosis of breast cancer in the Detroit metropolitan area. Governor JB Pritzker has also signed two pieces of legislation to establish a forward-thinking mental health infrastructure in Illinois. This legislation will create an innovative state response to mental health crises and ensure that all residents have access to the care they need.
